A year after that memorable first of February, 1917, when Germany unfurled the black flag of piracy in the face of the world, I was talking with a group of American soldiers at Bar-le-Duc.
I had just come back from Verdun and was telling them what I had seen in Germany nearly two years before when the crushing pincers pressed through Douaumont, Vaux, Thiaumont, Fleury and Dead Man's Hill; when once again, after the depression due to position-warfare and food shortage, I had heard the Germans talk boastingly of smashing victory and indemnities. Social Democrats had again forgotten their profession in the prospects of sweeping German victories and the indemnities that would keep down taxes.
I was delighted with the interest the American soldiers showed in everything German. Although much of our talk was of the light and bantering sort, these lads asked me questions concerning German ideas, politics and customs which showed how different one more declaration of war had made European affairs to a nation of more than a hundred million people.
