Opis: No Arms, No Legs, No Problem - Lujano Bob

Bob Lujano captured the nation’s attention when he contracted meningococcemia. For seventeen years, the headlines between Kansas, Texas, Tennessee, and across state lines through the National Enquirer sounded the same no matter the year or the paper: “…achieves goals despite disability…middle name is courage…gutsy teen beats odds...” Regis and Kathy Lee said his story was remarkable. Larry King said Bob and his Paralympic teammates were inspirational because they wouldn’t trade their disability. Now, Bob is passionate to share his journey because, “my story shouldn’t be the exception.”

On a cold January night in Kansas, 1979, Bob lay in a coma after both arms and legs were amputated. A visitor to his hospital room gave him the choice to live or die. Not caring the condition of his body, Bob chose life. He was determined to grow up and live independently like everyone else. But what purpose would he have Could he be successful

In an age before the American Disabilities Act existed, no one expected the disabled to accomplish much at all, let alone live independently.

From the time he left the hospital, Bob planted the seeds of gratitude that would grow his identity: The words, “I can’t” were erased from his vernacular. Obstacles were opportunities for mental and physical strength. He made decisions the able-bodied took for granted: He enrolled in normal schools, learned to drive, landed a career, gained financial and physical independence, dated, and prevailed at the international level in quad rugby.

Bob is defined by his character, not his disability. Tragedy did not mean his life was over; it meant life was different and there was still hope for a bright future. His life is an example of the value and potential we all have, despite our circumstances.

Bob’s story of perseverance, grace and redemption through immense physical trauma and dark family secrets will inspire you to refocus your perspective and to live up to your own potential with everything you’ve got.
