Opis: American Anthropologist, Vol. 7 (Classic Reprint) - Association American Anthropological

Excerpt from American Anthropologist, Vol. 7
Francisco Pizarro, discoverer of Peru and founder of its capital, the ancient " "City of the Kings," is a conspicuous figure in tho history of tho American hemisphere. Son of a soldier, a stripling in sunny Seville when Columbus returned from the mast momentous voyage the world has ever known and when Spain held the balance of power among nations, his life was molded by the inspiration of conquest. Endowed with remarkable physical vigor and mental activity and fired by the burning ambition of the Iberia of his day, he rose among his fellows and early became a leader of men. His indomitable will brooked no defeat; fortified by the fierce spirit of the times, lie ruse above all obstacles by individual prowess, and many episodes in his career were inscribed in blood. Measured by tho standard of his age, he was a conquering hero, worthy the admiration of mankind.
Born about 1471, Pizarro already held place in the New World in 1510, when he participated in the expedition of Ojeda and was placed in charge of the ill-fated settlement of San Sebastian ; he afterward accompanied Balboa to Darien, and thus contributed to the discovery of the Pacific. In 1522 his dream of conquest in the half-fabulous earlier El Dorado among the Andes took shape; but it was not until 1527 that he saw the shores of Peru, and five years more passed before he. with his companion Almagro, actually entered the land of the Incas.
