Excerpt from Glimpses Into Nature's Secrets: Or, Strolls on Beach and Down
A desire to do something towards feeding the widespread demand for information concerning the fascinating stories which Nature has to tell, is the plea which the author offers for the appearance of another work devoted to 'popular science.'
The first part is devoted to an attempt to bring under the observer's notice a few facts relating to those creatures of the sea-shore which, familiar more or less to all, are always replete with interest to the seaside sojourner, be he resident or visitor. It is hoped that the following chapters will be found neither too long nor tedious for those who seek but the elements of knowledge connected with the inhabitants of the shallows, nor too brief to obtain a satisfactory view of their chief characteristics; and that they may prove readable and entertaining, where lengthy and technical descriptions would be out of place.
